After
a lightning storm happens a man named
Dave Drayton (Thomas Jane) experiences a
mist in the lake but thinks nothing of
it. However, his son Billy (Nathan
Gamble) experiences a boathouse smashed
to pieces.
Then the two of them go to the
supermarket with their neighbor Brent
Norton (Andre Braugher) as it's crowded
as usual for people shopping for last
minute stuff.
Then they experience the army, fire
fighters and the police heading towards
the mist as it grows bigger as the
shoppers there doesn't have a clue what's
going on but then an old local townsfolk
with a bloody nose storms in and warns
people about the mist and tells the
people to close all the doors as the
store shakes, as though it was lifted
feet above the ground.
One of the employees who is a bag boy
named Norm (Chris Owen) checks on
something at the loading lock door as
Dave experiences a groaning and banging
sound. Norm is suddenly grabbed by a
creature with squid like tentacles
tearing him apart and pulled outside.
When Dave and the rest who experienced
this creature tries to warn the others a
customer at the store who is a religious
fanatic named Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay
Harden) tells them that God is punishing
them and poisons people's minds while
they are attacked by giant insects and
spiders as well so most of the people are
on her side as she tries to plan a
sacrifice for these creatures as she
thinks that a secret military plan called
"Project Arrowhead" is behind
all this madness and one of the military
members named Private Jessup (Sam Witwer)
so this gives Mrs. Carmody an idea for
who will be a perfect sacrifice and then
Dave and the rest who don't follow her
orders are in grave danger on who will be
next for these demonic creatures.

Well the story
sounds fascinating and at first with the
mist rolling in it seems fascinating in The
Fog type fashion but the story
alltogether is a total drag.
There are some good sequences with
gigantic insects and other creatures
attacking but most of the time it mainly
takes place in the supermarket most of
the time with a religious nut posioning
people's minds.
It really doesn't make sense as to why
this is all happening either. The Stephen
King novel is apparently better and
more understanding.

The acting is very
average as none of these people stand out
too much. Thomas Jane tries hard
with his firm like attitude to carry his
part out but sometimes he's a drag but
other times can seem to do well.
Marcia Gay Harden does a nice job as
a nasty religious fanatical nutcase in
the film making her part truly insane.
Laurie Holden seems to bring her
part across fairly descently as a level
headed one at the supermarket with a kind
attitude.
Andre Braugher seemed to have a nice
tough and blunt attitude to his role
almost proving to be a worthy character
actor.
William Sadler shows good loud
aggressions to his part as he also comes
across as believeably annoying too.

A young man's flesh is town
off by tentacles
A remains of a body is pulled by a rope
from outside
A mans body is bubbled up with bugs
coming out of him
Insects chew peoples faces and other
parts off
A person is stabbed
People are chewed up
A bullet shot in the head

The directing by Frank Darabont
is very slow along with his writing in it
but has some interesting moments too as
there is a nice shot on people outside
running from the mist hovering over them
and covering up a supermarket.
We have a good shot on supporting actor Chris
Owen looking down at some mist
through a half open metal door as well as
tentacles grabbing at him but the
terrrifying moment during that looked
quite corny.
There's a good stern attitude performed
by Andre Braugher towards
Thomas Jane not being convinced that
something is out there.
There's a nice nasty reaction by Marcia
Gay Harden towards Laurie Holden
on what is going on.
Harden does well by trying to poison
other people's minds with her beliefs
that God is angry acting all nutty.
There is also two very good close up
shots between Braugher and
Jane later on next to a glass door
of the supermarket.
There's a nice shot on Braugher
and his crowd walking out in the mist and
vanishing.
Good shots on giant insects attacking the
window of the supermarket as well as
crashing in and attacking.
A nice reaction on child actor Nathan
Gamble crying towards Jane
as a son to a father about the things
that are happening outside.
A good shot on Jane and some other
supporting actors like Frances Sternhagen
and William Sadler exploring a webbed up
diner which looked dark and creepy.
A good shot on Sadler with a
webbed up Braugher grabbing him
which the scene tries to make you jump a
bit but fails.
There are good battling scene's with
spiders attacking and people shooting at
them.
A nice menacing reaction on Harden
towards supporting actor Sam Witwer
as he freaks out well when she plans a
sacrifice for the creatures outside as it
looked believeably evil.
A nice sharp reaction on Harden
again towards Jane at the
supermarket trying to get others to gang
up on him and demands a sacrifice of his
child as I thought this is getting
insane.
Good shot on a giant spider trying to
attack Jane in front of a car
window although the spider looks at times
a little cheesy looking but still
monstrous.
Good shot on the car driving by in the
mist along with a gigantic creature
walking over the vehicle which was an
interesting effect.
Jane does well losing his sanity
towards the end by screaming out as well
with his insane expressions.

Not a huge songtrack score
by Mark Isham. However, he does
have some good humming sounds as well as
a woman's chant which seemed necessary
for the certain plots in this film.

Billy
Drayton: [running towards his
parents] Mom! Dad! You gotta come
see!
Stephanie Drayton: Hey Billy, take
it easy, alright? I really don't want you
running all over the place.
Billy Drayton: You gotta come look
at... the boathouse smashed. Holy crap!
Stephanie Drayton: Billy...
Billy Drayton: Sorry mom, but you
just gotta... come on, come on... whoa!
Stephanie Drayton: Whoa.
David Drayton: Whoa.
Amanda Dunfrey: I
just want you to know that it's okay...
being scared. And, well, if you need a
friend, someone to talk too...
Mrs. Carmody: I have a friend.
God, up above. I talk to him everyday.
Don't you condescend me.
Amanda Dunfrey: I'm sorry?
Mrs. Carmody: Not ever. You don't
mock me.
Amanda Dunfrey: That's not what I
was doing.
Mrs. Carmody: I'll tell you what.
The day I need a friend like you, I'll
just have myself a little squat and shit
one out.
Ollie: [Mrs.
Carmody is preaching to her 'cult' and
they're repeating expiation] Welcome
to Sesame Street, kids. Today's word is
'expiation'.
Myron: [looking
into the mist] So... any boogeymen?
Ollie: We have to
tell them. The people in the market. We
have to stop them from going outside.
David Drayton: They won't believe
us.
Ollie: They have to.
David Drayton: I'm not sure I
believe it, and I was here. What we saw
was impossible. You know that, don't you?
What do we say? How do we... convince
them? Ollie, what the hell were those
tentacles even attached to?
Mrs. Carmody: [to
Amanda] If you hit me again, if you
dare, you'll be on your knees to me
before this is through.
Brent Norton: Now
listen people. We are experiencing some
kind of disaster. I don't know whether
it's man-made or natural, but I do know
that it's definitely not supernatural. Or
biblical. And no offense Mrs. Carmody,
but the only way we're going to help
ourselves is to seek rescue. We're going
out.
David Drayton: Brent, look...
Brent Norton: I'm not discussing
this any further.
David Drayton: I know. I just want
to ask a favor.
[grabs some rope]
David Drayton: Tie this around
your waist.
Brent Norton: What for?
David Drayton: It'll let us know
you at least got three hundred feet.
Ollie: [Ollie
just fired 2 shots] I killed her.
David Drayton: Thank you Ollie.
Ollie: I killed her. I wouldn't
have done that if there had been any
other way.
David Drayton: That's why I said
thank you.
Irene: [after
hurling a can of peas at Mrs. Carmody]
Shut up, you miserable buzzard! Stoning
people who piss you off is perfectly
okay. They do it in the Bible, don't
they? And I got lots of peas!
David Drayton: [screaming
into the mist] Come on!
